MM&K, with the GECN group, has published annual research on how the world’s largest firms use ESG (environmental, social, governance) metrics to incentivise their executives. We are pleased to share our 2023 report on the dramatic shifts in the ESG sphere.

Our report comes in the wake of the upheavals of COVID and issues highlighted by the war in Ukraine, finding that ESG has not been cast aside, but has only grown in importance. The UK and Europe lead the world in ESG: in the FTSE100, an enviable 87% of firms feature ESG, marking a growth of 21% since 2019.

Sharp increase in environmental metrics reported across the globe.  Environmental metrics saw a staggering rise, with every region reporting an increase propelled in large part by metrics for greenhouse gases. Full article.

Diversity and Inclusion remains a priority for businesses.  Social metrics continued as the most prevalent category featuring in 72% of global plans, propped by diversity metrics which were seen in 60% of plans after considerable growth from the previous year. Full article.

Community metrics a low priority for FTSE100 and other large global firms.  Community metrics lagged far behind other factors, with only 1 in 8 FTSE100 firms featuring these metrics, less than half than the next least-prevalent Health & Safety metric. Full article.
