Life in the Boardroom 2026/27: Have Your Say

MM&K has officially launched the first pulse survey for the 2026/27 edition of Life in the Boardroom, our long-running survey of Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) and Board Chairs. Since 1990, the survey has gathered insights directly from directors, providing a unique perspective on life in the boardroom.

The survey covers NEDs and Chairs across UK and overseas listed and private companies, private equity portfolio companies, public sector organisations, not-for-profit organisations and charities. It continues to provide valuable insight into directors’ fees and time commitments, alongside their views on the issues shaping today’s boardrooms.

Why Participate?

As the pace of change facing boards continues to accelerate, Life in the Boardroom has evolved from a single biennial questionnaire into a series of shorter pulse surveys. This new approach allows us to capture directors’ views on emerging issues more frequently while reducing the time commitment for participants.

Everyone who completes this pulse survey will receive a complimentary mini report summarising the key findings and insights from their peers.

Insights from the 2025/26 Survey

Recent findings from the 2025/26 edition of Life in the Boardroom demonstrate why ongoing boardroom insight is so important:

• 78% of organisations were engaging with AI, yet only 18% had a formal AI policy in place.
• Only 30% of respondents reported that succession planning was fully embedded within their organisation.
• 65% of respondents believed their organisation provided sufficient cyber security training.
• 62% believed their organisation’s remuneration policy adequately met the needs of the wider workforce.
• Board meetings continued to move back towards face-to-face interaction, with 63% held in person and 37% online.

It will be interesting to see how these findings compare with responses from the 2026/27 survey cycle, particularly as boards continue to navigate technological change, evolving governance expectations and an increasingly complex operating environment.
