Growth Doesn’t Fail at the Market. It Fails Inside the Organisation.
August 14, 2026
In our experience, the biggest barriers to scale are usually internal. External conditions can constrain growth, but over time businesses more often lose momentum because the organisation has not evolved quickly enough to support the next stage of development. Priorities become less clear, decision-making slows and complexity increases faster than capability.
These barriers typically emerge across four connected areas:
Leadership lag
Scaling businesses need leaders who are clear on the capabilities that drive success, able to make decisions quickly and willing to adapt as the business evolves. Problems arise when leadership teams become disconnected from the front line, remain tied to legacy ways of working, or lack the cohesion, accountability and pace required for the next stage of growth.
Culture that does not scale
Culture becomes harder to sustain as organisations grow. A scalable culture requires clarity of purpose, strong behavioural norms and a clear connection between what the business is trying to achieve and how people are expected to work. Without this, politics can increase, accountability can weaken, innovation can fade and engagement can decline.
Complex organisation design and operating model
Growth often creates structural drag. Spans and layers increase, governance becomes more complicated, decision rights blur and information becomes trapped in silos. The organisation becomes more complex, but not necessarily more capable. High-performing businesses simplify structures, clarify roles and accountabilities, streamline governance and use technology to improve how work gets done.
People practices that have not kept pace
Many businesses try to scale using people processes designed for a smaller or very different organisation. Incentives, performance management, succession planning and talent acquisition need to evolve with the strategy and the capabilities the business requires. When they do not, the organisation can struggle to attract, develop, motivate and retain the people needed to support growth.
Our CEO, Rob Miller, recently appeared on the ‘Marketplace Matters’ with the London Stock Exchange, to explore the external pressures facing organisations today, as well as the internal challenges that are often overlooked.
