Just Launched: Life in the Boardroom 2025/26 – A Comprehensive Survey of Non-Executive Directors and Board Chairs on Fees, Time Commitments and Emerging Boardroom Trends

MM&K has officially launched the 2025/26 edition of Life in the Boardroom, a unique biennial survey that gathers insights directly from Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) and Board Chairs, rather than from company staff or annual reports. Since 1990, this survey has provided a detailed and accurate picture from the people who experience life in the boardroom first-hand.

The survey collects data from NEDs and Chairs across UK and overseas listed and private companies, private equity portfolio companies, public sector companies, not-for-profit organisations and charities, offering participants valuable insights into boardroom trends. Key areas covered include directors’ fees and time commitments, as well as their views on a range of topical board issues.

To ensure this year’s survey reflects directors’ experiences and key interests, MM&K conducted a pulse survey with previous participants, refining the questions to address the most pressing issues facing boards today. Based on the findings, the following are the topics of most interest to NEDs and will be included in the 2025 survey questionnaire:

• How critical is improving board-level cyber governance and digital resilience to your organisation’s long-term sustainability?
• How critical is regular board education on emerging risks such as those associated with artificial intelligence, data privacy, and geopolitical disruption?
• How critical is improving Executive-NED trust and communication to the effectiveness of the board?
• How important is it for NEDs to ensure that corporate culture, values and strategy are aligned?
